MEET the WI - but not as you know them…

These gals are members of the new Norton Fitzwarren WI Lite and at their first official meeting on Tuesday swapped jam and Jerusalem for a lesson in pole dancing.

The new group has so far attracted 30 members and was set up by Emma Jenkins, 34.

WI Lite has been running in other areas of the country but the group is the first of its kind in Somerset.

Emma said: "Most of the members are aged about 25-45 but there were a few a bit older than that.

"Members want to meet different people and do something different each month."

On the night, members tried their hand (and feet) at Zumba dancing, after a lesson by experts from Studio 22 and then took a twirl on the pole.

The next meeting is a 'know your boobs' night featuring bra fitting from Taunton store SiSi and advice from a nurse from Musgrove Park Hospital, Taunton, on breast cancer awareness.

The meetings occur every third Monday of the month

Pole dancing is not something you would immediately associate with the Women's Institute but one new group has enjoyed its first ever lesson in the activity.

WI Lite is an off-shoot of the more traditional WI and is aimed at younger people.

Its members at the Norton Fitzwarren branch decided that rather than organising trips to gardens and cake sales, they would have pole dancing and curry nights on the agenda instead.

President Emma Jenkins, 34, started the group so that younger people could enjoy the WI.

Their first meeting took place last month, which 59 people attended. Activities coming up include belly dancing and 'Know your boobs'.

One attendee said: "There's so much stigma attached to pole dancing and it's so brilliant for you for fitness and fun and for toning all those important areas. I've never kept up a class, I've never been to the gym but pole dancing has kept my interest."

But is pole dancing suitable for the WI?

Other events planned include belly dancing

Becky said her Nan refers to her as a lap dancer (something she is trying to steer her away from thinking!) as "when you think of pole dancing, you think of strippers".

"It's because traditionally that's where it comes from and now it's been taken out of that and brought into the fitness forum. I've got a pole up in my lounge and people walk in and think what the hell is going on! But it's just changing people's perceptions really."

Margaret Bigg from the WI said it was and that good for young people to have their own younger version of the institute so that they can learn new skills and meet people.

"They are doing exactly what we're doing in our other WIs but they are having speakers of their own choice."

    UK Pole Dancing Tour

    http://www.felixpoledancing.com.au/news/2009/09/uk-pole-dancing-tour/

    Bristol
I nearly had to stay in Bristol as Fairey (one of my new BFFs) offered to let me stay in her massive storage cupboard. Sadly her cupboard was seriously lacking in the biscuit department, the constant stream of Red Bull was a bonus but still… no cookies… I had such a great time with the girls in the master classes who were all so strong, talented and ready to rock the pole!

FORGET jam and Jerusalem, a new incarnation of the WI being set up in Norton Fitzwarren is more into pole dancing and firefighters.

Emma Jenkins, 34, is setting up Somerset's first branch of WI Lite - the latest in a new generation of WI groups appearing around the country.

She told the County Gazette that the group was open to all but that activities would be aimed at women aged 20-45 and would include curry nights, cheese and wine evenings (with an emphasis on the wine), safety talks from firefighters, theatre trips, 'know your boobs nights' for bra fittings, a burlesque night and belly dancing.

She said: "This is aimed at fun loving gals.

"Meetings will involve some traditional WI activities like cake making and how to make yourself a fab pair of curtains but will also have less traditional features like belly dancing and pole dancing lessons.

"It is a chance to meet like minded women have a glass of wine or cup of tea and a good gossip with a lot of fun to boot. Outings and activities will also be arranged as a group.

"Despite the modern agenda, the principles and traditions of the WI are still of utmost importance to WI Lite groups."

The first meeting, a cheese and wine evening, is due to take place at Norton Fitzwarren Village Hall on September 21 and is open to all. Meetings will take place on the third Monday of the month from 7.30-9.30pm with an annual membership costing about £30. For details, call Emma on 01823-254836 or 07591 868507.
